Gimme Shelter…And My Inhaler

First off, let me just say, I don’t run.  Ever.  For anything.  If I was heading to a bus stop and the last bus out of town was sitting there waiting, I would miss the bus and call a cab.  Because, like I said, I don’t run.

However, I like to think I could if I wanted to.  I‘m like a little dog who thinks she can catch the car in her dreams.  You know…and the little legs go in her sleep?  Yeah, that’s me.  My little legs go “run run run” in my sleep. But in reality…. HA!  No.  I don’t run.

Okay, now that we’ve established that fact—

Tonight I ran.

It was just after dinner and I had gone into the study, popped in my earbuds and cranked up the tunes.  That’s when the Rolling Stones’ Gimme Shelter started to play on my Walkman.  (YES, I HAVE A WALKMAN! It’s an mp3 player, but still a Walkman.  I hate all things Apple, so I’m the only one in the family without an iPod.  Story for a different time.)

Anyway, where were we?  Ah, yes.  Running.

I have no idea why Gimme Shelter always makes me want to run.  Usually, I just laugh and eat some ice cream instead.  But tonight…I really needed to run.  So I hit pause, dashed upstairs to change into some appropriate clothes and off I went.  


In the rain.

Down the street.

Half a block.  :\

And collapsed.

Okay, didn’t really collapse, but definitely needed air and there didn’t seem to be any.  Anywhere.

So I stood there, wheezing for a few moments…and then the chorus came on again.

And off I went.

I kept it up for about a mile and a half, alternating running and brisk walking, depending on the song.  It felt really good and I learned a few things:

a) my deodorant works under stress

b) my bra doesn’t


c) I really need to get my inhaler prescription refilled.

Here’s my favorite version of Gimme Shelter.  Cos I’m a giver like that.  Enjoy.  Eat some ice cream.  Or run…up to you.

  1. Next time start out just walking and work your way up to running. Better for your breathing and your knees. And always keep your inhaler handy. Good for you. Keep going, kiddo.
